Raychem Circuit Protection’s PolySwitch Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) Resettable Fuse
Description
Raychem Circuit Protection’s PolySwitch Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) devices are used to help protect against harmful overcurrent surges and overtemperature faults. Like traditional fuses, these devices limit the flow of dangerously high current during fault conditions. The PolySwitch device, however, resets after the fault is cleared and power to the circuit is removed, thereby reducing warranty, service and repair costs. This is achieved by using a polymeric PTC material, which is a matrix of a crystalline organic polymer containing dispersed conductive particles, usually carbon black. The sharp increase in resistance, as shown in Figure 1, is due to a phase change in the material. In its cool state the material is mostly crystalline, with the conductive particles being forced into the amorphous regions between the crystallites.

Automotive Devices
PolySwitch Automotive products are qualified and sold under the PS400 specification which is derived from AEC-Q200, the standard for electronic components used in the automotive industry. One key difference between Automotive and standard PolySwitch devices is the rigorous additional testing these devices have successfully passed to meet the demanding environmental conditions that can be found in automotive applications. Another is the addition of new specification values which characterize the products’ performance after being subjected to these specified environmental and electrical stress conditions.

PolySwitch Surface-mount Resettable Devices
More than fifteen years ago, Raychem Circuit Protection introduced the SMD product family, and polymeric PTC devices quickly became the computer industry standard for keyboard, mouse, and disk drive protection. In 1995, Raychem Circuit Protection advanced the technology, reducing the size and cost of surface-mount resettable PTC devices with the introduction of its miniSMD product family. The surface-mount family now includes the nanoSMD series, which reduces the size to a 3216mm (1206mils) foot print, one-third the size of the popular miniSMD series. Other products of this family are the miniSMD and the microSMD series.
